The Pueblo tailwater gets overlooked by South Platte anglers who assume you have to drive into the mountains for quality trout fishing. You don’t. The Arkansas River below Pueblo Reservoir holds a strong population of brown and rainbow trout in water that flows through the middle of the city — and it fishes well most of the year.
The defining characteristic of the Pueblo tailwater is the caddis. From late spring through early fall, caddis hatches on this stretch are prolific — heavier than most of the South Platte sections. Elk Hair Caddis #14–16, LaFontaine Sparkle Pupae, and caddis emergers should be the first flies you reach for. The fish know what caddis look like.
Flows are managed by releases from Pueblo Reservoir, which creates more stability than many freestone streams but also means sudden flow changes. Check releases before wading the lower sections — the channel can blow out quickly.
The access situation is legitimately good. The Arkansas River Recreational Area provides miles of public access along the river corridor, with marked parking and maintained paths. This is one of the most walker-friendly fishing destinations in Colorado.
Not as technical as Cheesman, not as remote as the Dream Stream — but worth fishing, particularly during summer when the South Platte sections are crowded and caddis here are thick.
