Beetle Fishing the South Platte: Summer Tactics

Foam beetle patterns produce big South Platte trout all summer. Learn sizes, colors, presentations, and when to fish beetles at Deckers and Cheesman Canyon.

Beetle fishing on the South Platte in late summer is one of the most underrated opportunities in Colorado tailwater fly fishing. While everyone’s rigging hoppers and hunting foam lines, the beetles are quietly getting eaten — flat, low-profile, and deadly on pressured fish that have seen every elk hair caddis and parachute pattern in the bin. If you fish Cheesman or Deckers in summer and you’re not carrying beetles in #14–18, you’re leaving fish on the table.

Why Beetles Outperform Ants and Hoppers on Flat Tailwater Water

Hoppers get all the attention and ants get the technical-fishing credit, but on the flat, pressured glides at Deckers and Cheesman Canyon, beetles are the move. Here’s why.

Hoppers are big, they land hard, and they create a visual disruption on entry. On fast pocket water or along grassy freestone banks, that splash triggers strikes. On a smooth tailwater flat where fish have a half-second to inspect something before it drifts into their lane, the commotion works against you. Hoppers also have a clear silhouette that fish in heavily pressured water pattern-match quickly. A beat-up size-10 Dave’s Hopper in July at Deckers is a fly that fish have seen a hundred times.

Ants are outstanding — don’t misread me — but they’re a smaller meal and require a dead-on presentation to get consistent takes on flat water. The film position on an ant is unforgiving. Fish it slightly proud and you’re fine; let it sink into the film and it reads wrong.

Beetles land soft, sit low in the surface film, and present an outline that is both substantial (enough calories to be worth the move) and ambiguous (not pattern-matched the way hoppers are). The hard, convex shell of a natural beetle barely dimples the surface. A well-tied foam beetle sits almost flush in the film with just enough surface tension holding it. On glass-smooth water, that low profile doesn’t telegraph “fake” the way a high-riding parachute does. And because beetles are ubiquitous — order Coleoptera has more species than any other insect order on earth — there’s almost never a time from July through September when a beetle is “wrong.”

The other thing working for you: beetles are genuinely overlooked by most anglers on this river, which means fish aren’t keyed to refuse them the way they refuse the fifteenth PMD sparkle dun of the morning.

Mid-Summer Into Fall — Peak Beetle Season on the South Platte

By August terrestrial season is fully on across this drainage. The grassy, sage-dotted banks along Deckers and the willowed edges through Cheesman heat up, afternoon winds pick up, and beetles start tumbling into the water in real numbers. Unlike a mayfly hatch, there’s no emergence window — beetles don’t hatch from the river. They fall. A hot, breezy afternoon shakes them off streamside vegetation, and they end up in the water without any plan to be there.

That accidental quality is important. A beetle on the water is just trying to survive. It kicks, struggles slightly, then sits there. No drift cue, no hatch timing, no spinner fall to wait for. Which means your job is simpler in one way — you don’t have to be there at 6 a.m. — but harder in another. You have to find the fish, put the fly in the right lane, and make it look like something that arrived by accident.

Wind is the trigger you’re waiting for. A few calm hot days followed by an afternoon with a consistent breeze is the setup. Fish the downwind bank. That’s where the beetles are landing.

Flows at Deckers through the summer typically run 150–300 CFS depending on reservoir management, though this varies year to year — always check the gauge before you drive down. At moderate flows, the flat glides between the faster runs are prime beetle water.

The Specific Patterns That Work at Deckers and Cheesman

Two categories of beetle patterns pull most of the weight here: foam beetles and CDC beetles. They serve slightly different purposes.

Foam Beetles

Foam is the default for visibility and durability. A black closed-cell foam beetle in #14–16 is the workhorse. Tied with a foam shell folded over a thread body, a small rubber leg or two on the sides, and a hot spot or UV resin underbody for the angler’s eye, it sits exactly where you want it — flush in the film, nearly unsinkable, and visible enough to track on a long flat-water drift.

For Cheesman and the upper Deckers flats I’ll run #14–16, dropping to #12 when they’re eating them confidently — bigger than people expect, because the fish are conditioned to smaller food. These are tailwater trout eating size-22 midges most of the year; an oversized hopper can read wrong to them in a way it doesn’t to a freestone brown. A #16 foam beetle is substantial enough to interest a 16-inch rainbow but not so big it raises flags.

Color: black is the standard and it works. Some anglers swear by brown or dark olive to match specific beetle species, and there’s probably something to that, but black is the one to start with. If you want a visible post for long drifts on flat water, add a small tuft of orange foam or a single CDC fiber clump on top — it doesn’t seem to hurt takes and it helps you track the fly at 40 feet.

CDC Beetles

A CDC (cul de canard) beetle is a different animal. Tied with CDC fibers folded forward over a dubbing body, it rides even lower in the film than foam — sometimes just barely breaking the surface. On ultra-flat, ultra-clear water where fish are in inspection mode, a CDC beetle often outperforms foam because the profile is more natural and the wing material moves slightly with current.

The trade-off: CDC drowns faster, especially if a fish takes it and misses. Treat it with Fly-Agra or a powder floatant, not gel. And in choppy or broken water, forget it — foam is the call.

In #16–18 for low, clear water, a CDC beetle with a black or dark brown body and a sparse CDC wing pulled over the top is one of the better searching patterns I’ve thrown in the middle of a slow July afternoon at Deckers when nothing specific is happening on the surface.

The pattern here is straightforward: match the profile to the pressure, not to a rule about size — these fish will eat a substantial beetle, they just won’t eat a careless one. Cheesman Canyon fish are the most educated trout in this state. A #16 foam beetle looks right to them in a way a #10 does not.

On freestone streams — think smaller drainages, less dam influence — you can go bigger. The fish there see fewer flies overall and the beetle just needs to look like food, not pass a biology exam.

The Beetle-Dropper Setup

One of the most productive summer rigs on flat tailwater is using a beetle as the top fly in a dry-dropper setup. Here’s how I build it:

The rig:

  • 5X fluorocarbon tippet to the beetle
  • 12–18 inches of 6X fluorocarbon off the bend of the beetle hook
  • A size #20–22 midge pupa or soft hackle off the dropper (Mercury Midge, Top Secret Midge, or a simple black soft hackle)

The beetle rides on the surface and acts as your strike indicator. The dropper hangs below and drifts through the film or just subsurface. Flat glides at Deckers are full of fish eating just below the surface — often midge pupae and emerging caddis — and the beetle-dropper combo covers both levels at once.

The key to this rig working: the beetle needs to float the dropper reliably. This is where foam beats CDC for the top fly. A #16 foam beetle will hold a #20 midge pupa without any problem. A CDC beetle starts to drown if there’s much weight on it.

Takes on the dropper show as the beetle dipping or moving slightly sideways — you have to stay focused. Takes on the beetle itself are often quiet, a flat dimple instead of a splash. Set on any movement.

My take

Beetles-as-indicator is something more anglers should try. I’ve had days at Deckers where the foam beetle never got touched and every fish came on the subsurface dropper — and I never would have known without watching the beetle. But I’ve also had fish eat the beetle while ignoring the dropper all afternoon. Running both at once just gives you information the single-fly angler doesn’t have. It’s a read-the-fish setup, not just a catch-fish setup, and on technical water that matters.

Bank-Hugging Presentation: Converting Refusals

Most beetle refusals on flat tailwater come from one of two places: the fly is dragging microscopically before the fish commits, or the fly landed too far from the bank to be convincing.

On the South Platte, terrestrial fish are almost always holding tight. Not “near the bank” — tight. A foot off the grass edge in three feet of water, sitting in the shade of overhanging vegetation, looking up at anything that falls from above. If your beetle lands two feet out from the bank, you’re fishing water that trout are not occupying the way they occupy that strip right against the grass. Close isn’t close enough. Get it within six inches of the bank or the grass line.

The presentation sequence that converts refusals:

  1. Slack-line cast. You’re presenting to flat water with no current variation to help you. Build slack into the cast — a pile cast or a reach cast depending on the angle — so the fly drifts drag-free for the first 2–3 feet. That’s usually all you get.

  2. Slight entry disturbance. This sounds counterintuitive given everything I said about hoppers landing hard, but a beetle does make a small plop when it hits. Don’t be afraid of that. The issue with hoppers isn’t the entry sound — it’s the size. A #16 beetle landing with a soft tick is actually realistic. Check the drift before you change anything else.

  3. No mend after landing. On flat water, a mend often disturbs the fly more than drag does. If your cast had slack built in, trust the drift. A mend on glass water sends a wake that kills the presentation.

  4. Let it sit. If a fish rises and refuses — takes a look, turns off — don’t pick up immediately. Let the fly sit for two or three seconds. Sometimes the fish comes back. If you’re twitching or lifting, the fish won’t return.

  5. Repeat the cast. If a fish rose and refused, cast again to the same lie within 30 seconds. They don’t spook as easily on a surface take refusal as they do when you put a shadow over them. Hit the same lane, the same distance from the bank. Most refusals on flat water are about drag, not pattern. Fix the drag, not the fly.

Where to Look for Beetle Fish in Cheesman and Deckers

This is bank water. Not runs, not riffles, not the middle of anything. The flat glides along undercut banks, the foam lanes that collect debris along grass edges, the slow inside bends where fish sit in the shade through the heat of the day.

Cheesman Canyon has some deep, walled sections where the canyon itself shades the water — those are midday beetle holds. Fish that are out of the sun and not actively rising can still be triggered by a beetle landing in their cone. They don’t have to be sipping to eat a beetle.

At Deckers, the accessible public water has long flat stretches where the river widens and slows. Those flats look boring compared to the pocketwater upstream, but they hold significant numbers of fish in July that are positioned exactly for terrestrial feeding. Work the edges slowly. Don’t wade the flat to get to the middle — you’re fishing the edges.

Overhanging willows and grassy cutbanks are your target. Anything that hangs over the water and could deposit a beetle is worth a cast. The fish know it.

August is the month when most anglers on this river are chasing Trico spinner falls and PMD hatches, which are real and worth fishing. But between the hatch windows, when the surface goes quiet and the fish go back to holding under the banks in the midday heat, a black foam beetle cast tight to the grass edge is often the only dry fly that will get a nose up. The fish aren’t keyed on it the way they key on a midge hatch. They’re just opportunists sitting in good lies waiting for something worth eating. Give them a beetle.
