Part 1 of The Tight Line — my series on fishing a tight-line rig on South Platte tailwaters. It starts where every drift starts: with the colored line that tells you everything.
For my first couple of seasons euro nymphing, I watched the sighter like it was a bobber. I’d stare at that colored line waiting for it to twitch, and when it did, I set. I caught some fish. I missed a lot more, and I couldn’t have told you why — I figured I was unlucky, or the fish were being jerks, or both. Standing in the Deckers riffle convinced everyone else had a secret I didn’t, I was technically euro nymphing and functionally guessing.
Here’s what finally clicked: the sighter isn’t a strike indicator. It’s a gauge. That little section of colored mono is reporting on everything happening at the end of your line — how connected you are, where your flies are, how deep they’re riding, how fast they’re moving — before a trout ever touches them. The take is just the fifth thing it tells you, and it’s the easy part once you’re reading the other four. It’s not a bobber that floats and waits. It’s a dashboard — and for two seasons I stood there reading exactly one dial and wondering why the car kept breaking down.
I fish a mono rig on a Diamondback 10’7” 3-weight: a 20 lb Maxima Chameleon butt for turnover, an Umpqua Perform X tricolor sighter, a tippet ring, then 5X or 6X fluoro down to a Blowtorch on point — orange tag in stained water, green tag in clear. No fly line out past the tip, no indicator, nothing on the surface for the current to grab. The long soft 3-weight is no accident either: the limp tip protects 6X on the set and telegraphs the take up through the cork. Everything I know about what’s happening underwater travels up that colored line. Here’s how I read it — the five things it reports, in the order they actually matter.
A sighter isn’t a bobber — so what is it?
A sighter is a section of high-visibility mono — usually bicolor or tricolor — built into a tight-line leader so you can see your connection to the flies. A bobber floats and tells you one thing, late: a fish already ate. (I’m not running down bobbers, for the record — I fish one plenty, and I laid out the whole case for them in strike indicators explained.) A sighter hangs in the air on a tight line, and its shape, angle, and speed report what your flies are doing the entire drift. The mental shift that took me embarrassingly long is that it isn’t a connector, it’s a transmission system — the part of the leader where you can actually see the same information that’s traveling up the tippet as feel. I still catch myself slipping into bobber-brain on a slow morning, staring and willing it to dip. The fish notice. They always notice.
1. Contact — are you actually tight to the flies?
This is the foundation, and the one nobody talks about because it’s invisible until you feel it. Contact means your sighter is leading the flies down the run — not dragging them, not feeding them slack.
You’re looking for a sighter that’s gently loaded. Not bellied and sagging (that’s slack — your flies are doing whatever the current wants and you’ll feel the take a half-second too late). Not bowed tight and skating downstream (that’s drag — you’re pulling the flies off the bottom and out of the zone). Somewhere in between there’s a shape that just barely holds its line, the faintest weight telling you the flies are down where they should be. The test I keep coming back to: the sighter should reflect the weight of the flies, not the weight of slack tippet. If it’s hanging limp while you’re fishing tungsten, you’re floating loose mono and hoping. Ask me how I know — I spent a whole spring “in contact” with nothing but my own optimism.
There’s a vocabulary for this worth knowing, and it belongs to Domenick Swentosky at Troutbitten, who split it into leading, tracking and guiding and has written more usefully about it than anyone. The two that matter most on this river are the first and the opposite of it.
Leading is actively setting the flies’ speed and path — sighter under light load, you driving the bus. Following is letting the current govern the flies and catching up only to confirm where they are. Which one you want is decided by the water, not by preference. On a slow Dream Stream glide I’m leading, metering the rig to the pace of the water the fish are actually sitting in, because the surface is running faster than they are. Drop into a pushy Deckers pocket or a plunge and I follow — there’s too much conflicting current to dictate terms, and trying to means dragging the flies through three seams at once. On Deckers I find contact by raising the rod tip until the slack comes out of the sighter and then stopping the instant I feel the flies. Everything else on this list depends on getting this part right first. Get contact wrong and the other four dials are just reporting on a drift that isn’t really yours.
2. Angle — where are your flies, really?
The angle the sighter makes to the water is a map. A steep, near-vertical sighter means your flies are close to straight below the tip — short, controlled, deep. A low, flat angle means they’re well downstream of you and you’re running out of drift. I try to hold mine somewhere around 30 to 45 degrees above the water through the heart of the drift; steeper and I’m fishing a column the size of a phone booth, flatter and I’m dragging.
I use the angle to know how much good water I have left. As the flies drift past me and the sighter lays down toward horizontal, the productive part of the drift is ending — the flies are starting to rise and swing, and the dead-drift window is closing. Reading the angle is how you stop fishing that dead part without realizing it — the mistake that had me swinging flies uselessly past my own knees, wondering where all the fish went.
It also tells you when to let go of a drift you’ve fallen in love with. New tight-liners — me, circa season one — milk the back end because the cast felt good. But once the sighter goes flat you’re not nymphing anymore, you’re doing a slow, sad streamer swing with a #18. On Cheesman’s glassy flats it’s worse: a flat-angled rig is a wake parading over the spookiest fish on the South Platte. Pick up, reset at the top of the seam, give them a fresh steep drift. Knowing where the top of the seam actually is comes straight out of reading pocket water and pool tailouts — the angle read only tells you how much of that water you have left. The drift you reset early beats the one you flogged to death every time.
3. Depth — how deep are they riding?
Depth is a two-part read: where the sighter enters the water, and the angle above it. The lower on the leader the color disappears into the surface, the more tippet you’ve got in the water and the deeper the flies are working. Combine that with a steep angle and you know you’re getting down.
The mistake I made for a year was changing flies when I should have been changing depth. Most “they won’t eat” problems on a tailwater are really “my flies are six inches over their heads” problems. I once burned through half a fly box on a pod of Deckers fish before admitting they’d have eaten the first fly fine a foot lower. Now I read the sighter for depth and adjust that before I touch a pattern.
And depth has more levers than “add a bigger bead.” Tungsten is the obvious one — I’ll jump from a 3.0 mm bead in a slow tailout to a 3.5 mm anchor in a deep, pushy Dream Stream seam without a second thought. But the quiet lever almost nobody uses is tippet diameter: thinner tippet cuts the current and sinks the same fly faster, so 5X to 6X is a depth adjustment, not just a stealth one. And when I need depth right now in a short, deep slot, a tuck cast drives the flies down under the leader to plummet instead of waiting on a lazy drift. Olsen’s rule of thumb is the one I fish by: the flies should tick bottom occasionally, not drag it. Never touching means too shallow; hanging up every drift means I’ve overcooked it. And remember the flow is a human decision here, not the weather — a dam bump runs the river higher and faster and quietly makes yesterday’s weight too light. I check the gauge before I drive, then let the sighter fine-tune what the gauge only roughed in.
4. Speed — ticking bottom, or racing the surface?
This is the read that changed my fishing most, and it’s the most counterintuitive. Your sighter should drift slower than the surface.
The water on top moves faster than the water on the bottom — friction against the streambed drags the bottom current slower, a real bit of fluid physics called the boundary layer. So if your flies are truly down in the strike zone, they’re sitting in that slower current, and your sighter should crawl downstream noticeably slower than the bubbles and foam on top. Keeping pace with the surface means your flies are riding too high in the faster water and you’re fishing over fish. So I watch a bubble next to my sighter constantly: when it pulls ahead and leaves the sighter behind, I’m down; when they move together, I add weight or thin the tippet.
I resisted this one because it feels wrong. Every instinct from a lifetime of bobber-watching screams that the indicator should keep up with the current, that a lagging line means drag. Backwards. A sighter losing the race to a bubble is the best news you’ll get all day — it means your flies found the slow water where the trout are loafing and eating. It clicked for me on the Arkansas tailwater below Pueblo, and I felt like a moron for every drift I’d spent matching the surface and calling it a “drag-free drift.”
That gap between surface speed and sighter speed is, to me, the single clearest “you’re fishing it right” signal in the whole system: your sighter should lose the race to the bubble.
Worth separating two things that sound like they fight each other. The sighter rides slightly ahead of your flies — that’s leading, and it’s how you keep contact instead of dragging the rig. But the whole rig, sighter included, should still travel slower than the surface foam, because that’s where the bottom current actually moves. Ahead of the flies, behind the bubbles. Both at once.
5. The take — finally, the part everyone watches
Here’s the irony: once you’re reading contact, angle, depth, and speed, the take reads itself. A fish on a tight line doesn’t bob your sighter — it interrupts it. The sighter stalls when everything else is drifting. It ticks upstream. It jumps a hair. It stops dead for no reason the current explains. On a Dream Stream rainbow, a take is often just the sighter pausing a quarter-second longer than the drift should allow — no dramatic dive, no movie-trout headshake, just a beat of wrong in a smooth drift. Blink and it’s gone.
The rule I fish by: set on anything that isn’t a natural drift. You’ll set on rocks. You’ll set on a clump of moss and mutter at yourself while the guy upstream watches. Set anyway — a tight-line hookset costs nothing but a re-drift, and the fish that eat and spit on this river don’t give second invitations. A winter Cheesman trout sipping a #20 midge inhales and rejects your fly in under a second, and the only evidence you get is that quarter-second hesitation. Setting is free; hesitating is expensive.
The set itself matters as much as the timing, and light tippet is unforgiving. I set downstream and across with a crisp, controlled lift — a sweep, not a haymaker. Wrench a violent hookset into 5X or 6X and you’ll snap off on the good ones — its own special heartbreak, reading the take right and then breaking the fish off on pure adrenaline. The Diamondback’s soft tip covers some of my sins there, but it can’t fix a panic strike. The good news: once you’ve dialed the first four reads, a real take stands out like a flat note in a song you finally know by heart.
My take
I spent two seasons treating the sighter like a strike indicator and wondering why euro nymphing felt like guessing. The day it turned a corner was the day I stopped watching it for the take and started reading it for everything else — contact first, then where the flies were, how deep, how fast. The takes started showing up on their own after that, because I was finally fishing the flies instead of hoping. The sighter was telling me the whole story the entire time. I just hadn’t learned the language.
How do I know if my flies are deep enough on a tight line?
Watch a bubble drift next to your sighter. If the bubble pulls ahead and your sighter lags behind it, your flies are down in the slower bottom current — that’s what you want. If the sighter keeps pace with the surface, they’re riding too high; add a heavier point fly, drop to thinner tippet, or lead the rig lower through the slot.
What color sighter is best for reading depth and speed?
Less about color, more about contrast and a clean two- or three-color transition you can track against moving water. I run a tricolor (Umpqua Perform X in red/black/green) because the junctions between colors are the reference points my eye locks onto for speed and angle — I’m reading the movement of that line, not just its brightness. Pick whatever pops against the water you fish; glary Deckers flats want a darker high-vis, shaded canyon water something brighter.
How do I read the sighter in the wind?
Wind is the great equalizer out on the open Dream Stream meadow — it’ll bounce a high-held sighter into useless chatter. Build contact lower: keep the junction nearer the surface so the weight of the flies loads it instead of slack tippet flapping in the breeze. Drop your rod tip out of the gusts, lean on a heavier point fly to anchor the rig, and trust feel over sight when the line won’t hold still — some days the take reaches your fingers before your eyes catch it.
Bottom line
A bobber answers one question, and only after it’s too late to do much about it. A sighter answers five in real time: am I in contact, where are my flies, how deep, how fast, and — last and easiest — did one eat. Learn the first four and the fifth stops being something you wait for and becomes something you simply notice. Stop watching your sighter for the take. Start reading it for the truth, and the takes come with.
