Spinney Mountain
South Platte — Antero Reservoir to Spinney Mountain Reservoir
Hatch Reports
First report for this section coming soon.
The Spinney Mountain section is the stretch of South Platte running between Antero Reservoir and Spinney Mountain Reservoir, through the high meadows of South Park at around 8,700 feet. It’s catch-and-release water with artificial flies and lures only — the same regulations that define the Dream Stream below it.
What distinguishes this section from the Dream Stream: it’s less known, which means less pressure. The fish are the same caliber — wild browns and rainbows with the size and wariness that come from a heavily regulated tailwater — but on a Tuesday in October you might have a mile of water to yourself.
Wind is the constant challenge. South Park is exposed and the afternoon wind can make surface presentation impossible by noon. Early mornings are the window. Midge and BWO fishing is most reliable; the PMD hatch arrives late at this elevation, typically June.
Access is via Spinney Mountain SWA off CR 59. Day-use fee applies. The state wildlife area boundaries include portions of both the stream and adjacent reservoir — know where you are before you fish.
